D'Iberville -- Friday night's Region 7-6A title was a long time coming for George County's boys basketball team. All year the No. 5 Rebels have had success, but Friday they proved they belong in their new region with an impressive 64-58 victory over No. 3 St. Martin. "Very proud of our guys. We worked hard all year long. We've said it before that our district and the Coast is kind of up for grabs. Whoever plays well on any given night is going to come away with the win," George County coach Ron Renfroe said. "I thought our guys did a good job executing and trying to keep Stacee (St. Julian) in check. We didn't turn the ball over like we did in the previous game against them. I couldn't be more proud of these guys. "Its been a little while. This was a great win for us." George County earns a first-round bye in the Class 6A playoffs with the win. St. Martin, which won the last three region titles, will host Harrison Central on Tuesday. St. Martin coach Charlie Pavlus agreed that in a game where neither team was allowed any breathing room, the Yellow Jackets didn't get the stops and turnovers they typically do. "You win championships by making stops and we didn't stop them at all," he said. "(LaRaymond) Spivery ate us up. And when he wasn't shooting he was dropping it off with assists. Our kids played extremely hard, we just didn't play well defensively." While George County held the lead for the majority of the contest, the two teams were never very far apart. George County held a 13-9 lead after the first quarter and a 27-25 advantage at halftime. The two teams were deadlocked 46-46 heading into the final frame. "Any one mistake could have been it," Renfroe said. "You had to play flawless. We didn't, but it was close enough tonight to get the win." While Spivery was the main scorer for George County (16-6) with a game-high 22 points, it was Tyrese Fryfogle who came up big down the stretch for the Rebels. Fryfogle scored eight of his 13 points in the final frame to keep GCHS ahead of St. Martin (20-9). Rashad Wiggins also scored 11 points for the Rebels. St. Julian led St. Martin with 19 points, while Johnnelius Anderson scored 14 and Jonte Moultre had 11. ALL-REGION SELECTIONS Evan Howard (D'Iberville), Wiggins, Daetran Bivens (St. Martin), Malcolm Magee (Ocean Springs) and Fryfogle were all named to the 7-6A First Team. Moultrie, Randy Leverette (George County), Dillyn Neely (D'Iberville), Anderson and Charles Bateman (Ocean Springs) earned second team honors. St. Martin's Jalen Lett was named the 7-6A Defensive Player of the Year, D'Iberville's Zach Scales split the 7-6A Offensive Player of the Year honors with Spivery, St. Julian was named the 7-6A MVP and Renfroe was named the 7-6A Coach of the Year.
