Prep basketball playoffs tip-off Monday

PREP BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS TIP-OFF MONDAY

The state prep basketball playoffs tip off Monday all across south Mississippi. There are 10 local squads still left standing as the postseason begins, five girls teams and five boys teams. Three of those teams, the Pascagoula and George County boys along with the St. Martin girls, received first round byes thanks to winning their respective region tourney titles and won't see action until this weekend. The rest of the squads, the Moss Point girls and boys, the Ocean Springs and Pascagoula girls, the East Central girls as well as the St. Martin and Moss Point boys will all begin the playoffs over the next two days. The girls start on Monday and the boys are set to begin on Tuesday. Here is a complete list of games involving local teams: Monday, 6A girls Biloxi at Ocean Springs, 7 p.m. (These long time region rivals were split apart this season, and have met only once this year when the Lady Greyhounds beat the Lady Indians 52-32 in the Bay High Christmas Classic) Monday, 5A girls Stone County at Pascagoula, 7 p.m. (A rematch of a second round game from last seasons Class 5A South State playoffs, when the Lady Tomcats came to Jackson County and upset the Lady Panthers 55-51) Monday, 4A girls East Central at Forrest County, 7 p.m. (Second year ECHS head coach Wes Brewer has guided the Lady Hornets to the state playoffs for the second straight season for the first time in over two decades) Monday, 4A girls Moss Point at Sumrall, 7 p.m. (Sumrall is the second seed in Region 7-4A after a huge overtime upset of top-seed Greene County in the region tournament) Friday, 6A girls Oak Grove at St. Martin, 7 p.m. (The Lady Yellow Jackets are an impressive 26-2 on the season, one of the best marks ever in school history. Oak Grove beat Forest Hill Monday) Wednesday, 6A boys Harrison Central at St. Martin, 7 p.m. (These teams split a pair of meetings during the regular season) Wednesday, 4A boys Moss Point at Columbia, 7 p.m. (Second year Moss Point head coach Tony Woody returns to his old stomping grounds. Woody spent 19 years as the head coach at CHS, including leading the Wildcats to the Class 3A state finals in 2008) Wednesday, 4A boys Vancleave at Sumrall, 7 p.m. (Bulldogs head coach Robert Johnson won only eight games during his first two years at the helm of VHS, but the squad rebounded this season and stands 17-10 heading into the postseason for just the second time in the past 10 years) Saturday, 5A boys South Jones-Brookhaven winner at Pascagoula, 7 p.m. (The Panthers won their third consecutive Region 7-5A title under the direction of head coach Ron Norman) Saturday, 6A boys Pearl-Brandon winner at George County, 7 p.m. (The Rebels won their first district championship in 12 years) Photo: Bobby McDuffie/gulflive.com
