ST. MARTIN SMACKS MADISON-RIDGELAND ACADEMY

St. Martin used a strong second half to overpower homestanding Madison-Ridgeland Academy 51-28 Friday night. It marked the second straight season that the Yellow Jackets have opened the season 2-0 with a win over the Raiders. St. Martin senior quarterback Wayne Overman accounted for four touchdowns, two through the air and yet another two on the ground, and junior running back Ham McGee added a pair of scoring runs as well for the Yellow Jackets in the win. The game was tied up at 21-21 at halftime, before St. Martin went on a 17-0 run in the first three minutes of the second half to take control. "I was proud of the way we responded in the second half," SMHS head coach Eddie Wayne Whitehead said. "We've shown some character in the first two games by overcoming a little adversity. Hopefully that will help us the rest of the year." The decisive spurt in the second half began with a 44-yard scoring scamper by Overman. On MRA's ensuing possession, St. Martin's Rico Moore blocked a punt that went out of back of the end of zone for a safety. "That was the difference in the game," Whitehead added. "That part of the third quarter was the key, and Moore's play may have been the biggest in the game of big plays for us." One play later after receiving the kickoff after recording the safety, McGee scored on a 35 yard touchdown jaunt. McGee ran for 141 yards on eight carries and three touchdowns in the win. He scored on a 2-yard touchdown run for the game's first touchdown and He also broke loose on an 80-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Overman, meanwhile, ran for 136 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns. He also completed eight passes for 156 yards and a pair of scores. The Yellow Jackets trailed Poplarville last week 14-0 early to open the season before coming back for a 35-14 win. "The character we have shown in the first two games has been big for us," Whitehead concluded. "If we just play together as a team every week we will be tough to beat." St. Martin remains on the road next week, traveling to Picayune. The Maroon Tide opened the season with a 35-6 thumping of D'Iberville Friday night.
